Easy Dutch Oven Cooking

Cooking with a Dutch oven can be a little intimidating for those who have yet to approach it. The good news is, it’s not as difficult as it may seem, and with a little instructional guidance, you’ll be serving up family favorites at your campsite in no time flat.

The Dutch oven can handle all types of cooking techniques and cooking styles. It can boil as well as it fries and it can steam as well as it bakes…..even bread! So start with the basics and work your way forward.

Dutch oven recipes are simple and easy to follow, so there’s not a lot to learn. Once you’re mastered one recipe, moving onto the other doesn’t seem so scary. Whether you’re looking to whip up a quick breakfast or serve your family a pot roast this is a simple oven to use. So, pick a stew, breakfast or other easy camping recipe to get started.

Dutch ovens come in as many configurations as there are people to cook food in them. There are bonuses and downfalls to each, but overall finding the perfect Dutch oven to suit your tastes isn’t all that difficult. They vary in size based upon diameter and number of quarts that each holds.

Remember that you will be using open flame when cooking with a Dutch oven, thus a pair of heavy leather gloves that can resist the serious heat the fire can put out is highly recommended. And don’t forget a pair of long-handled tongs that can be used to safely move the coals around and remove them from the fire and place them around your Dutch oven.

Getting your oven ready will usually require nothing more than a solid washing with soap and water. Once dried, cover it with cook oil (every surface, the legs….every where!) and put it in your oven at 350° F for an hour. Once it has cooled, it is pretreated and ready for use!

Whether you’re roasting, baking, broiling, or boiling, your hot coal placement will vary. For some, starting with one cooking method until it is just right and moving to another makes good sense. For others, variation is the name of the learning game. Even the lid can be used for excellent griddle style foods! With one step at a time, Dutch oven cooking can become second nature well before the end of the camping season.

Every Camp Needs a Dutch Oven

The weather is getting warmer, the days are getting longer, kids are out of school. That can only mean one thing: summer is upon us. Summer in my family means one thing: camping season. Our favorite vacation destination is somewhere high in the mountains, far from any sign of civilization. I do not know what makes camping so appealing. Is it the serenity, the solitude, the beauty of nature? Is it the quietness, the fresh air, the escape from all stresses, worries, and cares of “real life”? Sleeping on the ground? Living without running water and hot showers? Whatever it is, there is nothing like the great outdoors. Fishing, hiking, or just relaxing, there is something for everyone. One thing I do know is that one of the best parts of “roughing it” is eating. No matter how hard you fight it, you always eat way too much.

If you’re looking for the most tasty food, cook it outside. I sincerely can’t mention to you what it is that makes it so extraordinary. Something about the crisp air gives your food new flavor. Cooking with fire and charcoal give a flavor to food which will never be duplicated. No matter how many outdoor cookouts you have attended, you have not tried the finest in outdoor cooking unless you have cooked your food in a dutch oven. A cast iron dutch oven used to cook your meal very slow creates a very desirable flavor.

The dutch oven is used for all kinds of food: supper, dessert, and every other meal can be made. bread, cake, soup: you name it, if it’s edible, it can probably be prepared in a dutch oven. Since dutch ovens are stackable, a three or four course meal can be made all in the same hour.

Another awesome thing with dutch ovens is the fact that you can always leave your dutch oven with the charcoal briquettes on top of the lid and on bottom and you never have to touch it again till its done. No one want to have to spend a lot of time cooking during vacation, and using a dutch oven stove will allow you to do what you like and then come back for a delicious meal.

If you’re looking to see if your food is ready in a dutch oven, don’t get too careless, be cautious or you will sprinkle your meal with some natural salt and pepper. This yummy kind of salt and pepper is actually ash that falls off the lid of the dutch oven as it is being removed from the dutch oven stove. Don’t worry too much about it though because it really doesn’t taste terrible and it isn’t a health concern. Although it does leave a nice texture.

Peach cobbler is a must for anyone experimenting with dutch oven cooking. Peaches, white cake mix, 7-Up, and a little oil: top with ice cream or whip cream for a very rich dessert that no one can resist. Don’t like peaches? Use cherries, blueberries, apples, or any fruit you fancy. Even an amateur dutch oven chef can master the art of cobbler. It’s the first recipe we tried in my family before moving on to more complicated recipes: fried potatoes, pot roast, breakfast casserole, and the ever popular chicken marinated with Coke (or Diet Coke for the weight watchers). Whatever tastes your family prefers, there is a dutch oven recipe for you.

Wonderful Dutch Oven Recipes

Cooking with a Dutch oven while camping is a great way to enjoy meals that are delicious and easy. Some of my favorite camping memories involve Dutch oven dinners! Because food is such an important part to a good camping experience, take along your Dutch oven and try out some of the recipes that are included below.

Cast iron is a great material for cooking both in the home and out camping. Food doesn’t stick to cast iron cookware and helps to distribute heat evenly quickly. The best thing about cast iron Dutch ovens is that it is easy to clean. All those who have made meals before while camping know that easy cleanup is a must. Just use soap and water and dry it out soon after washing to prevent rusting. Cast iron Dutch ovens last forever; you can not damage or ruin them. Make sure to add two or three Dutch ovens to your camping cookware collection to create many enjoyable camping memories.

Here we have a few of my favorite things to cook in a Dutch oven.

Enchiladas (This is one of my favorite Dutch oven recipes)

two lbs. hamburger

one large green pepper

one large onion

one large red pepper

one package tortillas

one bottle enchilada sauce

one pound of cheese

one pound of mozzarella cheese

Non stick vegetable spray

Spray with non-stick spray (make sure you always do this). You should create a hole in the center of the tortilla. Line the bottom and sides with the tortillas. Use the small lid to the Dutch oven and brown the hamburger, adding the onion and peppers. Pour half of the hamburger, cheese, and enchilada sauce over the first layer of tortillas. Repeat this twice and top with cheese. Cook over medium heat on a camp stove or use 30 briquettes for 375 degrees. Place 20 of the briquettes on top and 10 underneath. Heat until hot and the cheese is melted.

When it comes it Dutch oven cooking I have many favorites. Chili is definitely one of them

Easy Chili

one small bag of chili beans

1/4 tsp. soda

one tsp. salt

one can tomato soup

1/2 bottle catsup

one Tbsp. sugar

1/2 tsp. chili powder

one onion

3 tsp. pepper

Soak beans with 1/4 tsp. soda by covering them with water for about 6-8 hours (soaking the beans overnight is a good idea). Drain beans and pour into the Dutch oven. Add fresh water about 1 inch above the beans. Add 1 tsp. salt and cook over medium heat on your stove or use 10-11 briquettes. Boil for about 2 hours. Add tomato soup, catsup, sugar, and chili powder. Cook over medium heat on camp stove or use 10-11 briquettes. Let this mixture boil.

With the small lid and brown hamburger and onion. Take off grease and add to liquid mixture. Add pepper and cook over low heat on camp stove or use 8 or 9 briquettes for about 20 minutes. Continue stirring.

Finally, the best part: DESSERT!

Fantastic Cake

one box of cake mix

4 Tbsp. flour (divided)

Non stick vegetable spray

Follow the directions on the cake mix box. Add 1 Tbsp. of flour to mix. Remove all racks and spray with non stick spray. Coat with 3 Tbsp. of flour. Discard extra flour and pour cake batter in. Put lid on and cook over low to medium low heat on a camp stove or use 8 to 9 briquettes. Cook 15-20 minutes. Test with a toothpick: Cake is done when toothpick comes out clean. Remove from heat and let cool for 5 minutes.

Now you will take a knife and cut around the cake. Rotate the grill upside down and place it on top of the dutch oven. Using hot pads, hold the grill in place and turn the Dutch oven upside down so the cake falls out onto the grill. Cover with icing when cake is completely cooled.

Remember, you can only cook one meal at a time with only one Dutch oven so it is important that you have two or maybe three so that you can have your full 3 course meal at the same time and not have to wait for your dessert hours after you have your meal. I hope you like these recipes and use them well.

Dutch Oven cooking is fun and easy. Dutch oven recipes are abundant and adapting them from your favorite home recipes is easy. With a little experience you’ll find that it is fairly simple to cook with your Dutch oven. Here are some easy Dutch oven recipes to try:

Easy Dutch Oven Mountain Man Hash

1 lb. Bacon or sausage

2 lbs frozen potatoes (shredded or southern style)

1 dozen eggs

2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

Cut bacon/sausage into smaller pieces (about 1″). Cook the bacon or sausage in the Dutch oven. Add potatoes, cover with lid with coals on top. Cook until potatoes are done, stirring occasionally. Mix eggs together in a bowl and pour on top of potatoes. Replace lid with coals on top and cook until eggs are done (shouldn’t need a long time if the lid is hot). When eggs are done, sprinkle cheese on top, replace lid and bake until cheese is melted. Serve as is, or wrap spoonfuls in warmed flour tortillas to make breakfast burritos (provide salsa).

Easy Dutch Oven Taco Pie

1 ½ lbs. Ground beef

1 medium jar of taco sauce

6 large corn tortillas

8 oz shredded cheddar cheese

8 oz can of tomato sauce

Brown the ground beef and drain it. Mix the taco sauce and tomato sauce. Line the Dutch oven with tin foil and put 3 tortillas in the bottom. Put ½ of the ground beef on the tortillas and cover with ½ of the sauce. Put 3 more tortilla shells on top, and put the remaining ground beef and sauce on top of those tortillas. Sprinkle the cheese on top. Cover the Dutch oven, place a few coals on top, and bake until the cheese is melted. You could also add onions, olives, mushrooms for some variety.

Easy Dutch Oven Au Gratin Potatoes

8-10 potatoes, sliced thin

2-3 Tbsp. Melted butter or margarine

2-3 medium onions, sliced thin

15 oz can of cheese soup

¼ cup milk

½ cup cracker or bread crumbs

1 cup shredded cheese

Put a little oil in the bottom of the Dutch oven. Put a layer of potatoes in the bottom and brush with the melted butter. Season with salt and pepper, if desired. Add a layer of sliced onions. Continue the layering with potatoes and onions as described until all have been used. Mix the soup with the milk and pour over the top. Sprinkle the top with the bread or cracker crumbs. Add any additional desired seasonings. Put Dutch oven over 6-8 briquets and 16-18 briquets on top. Bake for 45 minutes. Remove and sprinkle the top with the shredded cheese. Replace lid and let the cheese melt-shouldn’t take long.

Easy Dutch Oven Cowboy Stew

4 potatoes, cut into 1 inch pieces

1 lb ground beef

1 medium onion, diced

1 can of corn

1 can of peas

1 can of stewed tomatoes

1 can of green beans

1 can of baked beans

1 can of tomato soup

Bay leaf

Brown ground beef and onions. Add all other ingredients (don’t drain the cans). Add bay leaf and any other desired seasonings, such as salt and pepper. Cook until the potatoes are done.

Easy Dutch Oven Cinnamon Bread

4 cans of refrigerated tube biscuits

1 cup of brown sugar

1/2 cup butter or margarine

1 cup of sugar

4 tsp cinnamon

Cut each biscuit into 4 pieces. Mix the sugar, brown sugar, and cinnamon in a zip-lock bag. Put the biscuit quarters in the bag and shake until they are all well-coated. Place the biscuit pieces in the bottom of the Dutch oven. Melt the butter and then pour over the biscuit quarters (you can do this with another pan, or you can use the inverted lid of the Dutch oven to melt the butter). Put 6-8 coals underneath Dutch oven and 14-15 on top. Bake for 30 minutes.
