An Indian Foodie in Toronto
Article by Kayla Tyler
Enticingly hot spices that can make your eyes water, delicious melted butter that can cause your arteries to clog and sinfully rich, creamy sauces that can add a huge sum to your calorie count. Ah, Indian food. Authentic Indian cuisine traveled halfway across the globe and found its likely destination, no less than the best restaurants in Toronto. Authentic Indian food in Toronto is like Annapurna’s gift to men and women of color residing here in Canada. I am convinced that the Hindu goddess of food and cooking has touched the chefs of top Indian restaurants allowing them to cook sumptuous Indian cuisine in Toronto. There seems to be a sudden boom of Indian food places that you’d expect to see one beside any of the Toronto downtown hotels. Naturally, not all restaurants offer mouth-watering dishes that give us a taste of home, literally and otherwise. Either way, bi-racial foodies like me are very much thankful that our favorite food staples are available all over town – although nothing can ever compare to paatti’s home-cooked chicken tikka makhani or her simple masala bhindi. Not being a bona fide food critic, my restaurant suggestions might not be of much importance. But considering my Indian heritage, I know my particular food suggestions – my personal favorites – would matter. Chicken tikka makhani (butter chicken)Grilled, roasted or pan fried chicken marinated in yogurt, garam masala, coriander, cumin, chili, turmeric and ginger. The thick makhani (sauce) is a thick puree made of tomato, crème fresh, fenugreek, cinnamon, all the above-mentioned spices and tubs of butter. This dish is not for the faint of stomach or for the calorie-conscious as this can be filling as filling can be. Because of its richness, it is usually served with rotti, naan or hot steaming rice. Comfort food as its finest, if I may say. Lamb vindalooAnother dish that has ‘ridiculously satisfying’ written all over it: spicy lamb in coconut and red wine vinegar. Vindaloo is a Goan meal introduced by the Portuguese. What used to be just a meat dish seasoned with wine and garlic evolved into the hot curry dish it is now when it was modified with lots of spices. This is perfect for spicy food lovers as it can really make your mouth burst into flames and your eyes water. It gives a rather new meaning to the term mouth-watering. Rajasthani bhindi (Rajasthani okra fry)I’ll trade in French fries any day for this healthy deep fried dish. Note that I love good meat on me but this easy-to-make dish turned me into a veggie fan in an instant. It is made by seasoning fresh okra with a mixture of gram masala, turmeric, cumin, chili powder, fennel seeds, coriander and a teaspoon of oil and deep frying until crisp and golden.
